Catawba
Island |
|
The first settlers came to what is now Catawba Island
in 1835. There were three families and three single men. They cleared land,
erected log cabins for their homes, farmed the land they had cleared and fished. As
more people came, more land was cleared and fruit became the principal crop raised along
with feed for their stock and gardens for their own use. Steamers came to the end of
the Island to haul away the fruit and produce and also provided transportation for the
residents. |
Catawba Island meets Portage Township two miles
east of Port Clinton, and its seven miles length widens to two miles. It holds West
Harbor and Middle Harbor and is separated from Danbury Township by East Harbor. Four
bridges crossed the sandbar on the Sand Road so
Catawba was a true island until the twentieth century.
The last census indicated that the population of Catawba Island was 3,148. |
Catawba State Park is a day-use park and serves as the main
headquarters for Kelleys Island, South Bass and Oak Point and
Middle Bass Island state parks. A fishing pier, launch ramp, picnic shelter
and picnic areas can be found here. Swimming is permitted at your own risk |
